The numbers don't back that impression. That's the value of numbers...sometimes our eyes see assumptions and not real things.

His highest perecentage of runs have been to the left side or outside the left side (36.5%)

Avg. yards per carry, Gurley on 1st down with 8-10 to go: 4.1. His highest YPA of any situation (except for the 5 runs on 2nd + 10 or more, where he got 4.8).

Of the 4 downs taken together, regardless of distance, his highest YPA (3.9) is on 1st down. 3.9 is not great but it's enough.

Rams are tied for 29th on running attempts on 1st down, which means they do it fewer times than all but 4 teams.

Their Run/Pass ratio on 1st down is 5/12 in favor of passing. That means they pass on 1st down around 2/3rds of the time.
