I don't think it's a concern because they'd have Mannion through 2018. 2019 is so far off and there are always veteran backups available. or you dip into the draft again. Having a competent backup you used a 3rd round pick on and that makes under $800k/year would be nice for this team.
But again if they re-sign Keenum to be the #2 I'd be all for it...
It's just a matter of whether you want to go inexpensive on a back-up NOW or have to worry about finding one in 2 years.
I would rather pay one now, frankly. It's that important, IMO. So far in 5 years they have started 7 different qbs. Bradford, Clemens, Austin, Hill, Foles, Keenum, Goff. Of the #2 types Keenum was the only one worth keeping. Mannion may be cheap but he is also inexperienced. And don't get me wrong I like Mannion (thus far.)
So to me the issue is 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. We will see what they do.
...
I really think this would be settled by how good they feel Mannion will be. Mannion may be inexperienced but if they feel he will be just as good if not better than Keenum than going with him makes so much sense. Why pay now if you can save money now and punt the payment decision two years down the road?
