The throw was taking him out of bounds. He could have walked the line for another yard or two though. It was a bit of an attempt to taunt the defenders or perhaps earn a personal foul for suddenly hopping out of bounds but the defenders seemed intent to let him out knowing that he wasn't going to stay in bounds.
