I don't think it's true that the defense knew exactly what the Rams were doing. I think one player said that, and it's more apocryphal than true.

I like Farr;s take on this. He said that basically the SF defense initiated a particular kind of attack the Rams OL could not handle...they not only stacked the box and filled all gaps, they used movement and stunts to keep the OL guessing as to whom they should block. That caused hesitation. Other defenses have tried the same thing since, but they did not manage to shut down both the run game AND the Rams long passing game .

That's my take so far....I agree with D'marco.
