Why would the Rams tell another team what they were going to do?
What do the Rams stand to gain by doing that? Nothing.
Plus, the Rams were playing the PR game and miking the #1 pick for all it was worth.
Imagine if they told the Eagles and someone in the Eagles organization leaked it out. How stupid is that?
You can have your own conviction that the Eagles "knew" the Rams were taking Goff. Goff and Wentz do have the same agent so maybe there was a good guess involved. But they had to be prepared for the Rams to pull a fast one on them.
The Eagles never had Wentz until the Goodell announced that the Rams took Goff. And they certainly didn't know for sure when they made that trade.
It's probably true that he Browns made the trade down because they didn't like Wentz and they thought Goff was going #1, but they weren't sure either, and they may have traded down anyway not wanting either QB and preferring the picks. They didn't take any of the top 5 QBs (Goff, Wentz, Lynch, Prescott, Cook), and they could have had any of them except one. So maybe Goff was the only one they would take or maybe they would have passed on him too. We just don't know.
All we know for sure is that the Rams preferred Goff.
And not only the Rams.
Pro Football Focus preferred Goff.
Football Outsiders preferred Goff.
Matt Waldman preferred Goff.
Louis Riddick preferred Goff.
Pete Prisco preferred Goff.
Drew Boylhart preferred Goff.
Bucky Brooks preferred Goff.
And probably just as many media guys preferred Wentz.
Point being there was no clear cut choice. And the Eagles need to be prepared to take either one.
