We've gotta bear in mind that it's preseason. Meaning that vets just aren't feeling the need to go 100% just yet if their starter status is secure. And GW isn't scheming much yet, if at all. THAT will change come opening day, trust me.
This applies to both TruJo and TJM. We will see the "real" players there when the regular season begins. Both played at near Pro Bowl level in '15. I see no worries at those 2 starting positions. None.
Which brings us to the other outside CB position. It's gonna be Gaines. A quality CB in his rookie year, for cryin' out loud. He's gonna knock the rust off in these next 2 weeks and should hit the ground running by opening day. So, there's very little concern for me about Gaines. I've long said that I think I prefer a healthy Gaines to Jenkins. Lol.
Slot CB starter is gonna be Joyner. Same as last year. He'll be fine there.
The starting deep S remains up in the air. Davis started vs the Chiefs and failed to distinguish himself. But he was my 3rd candidate for deep S, anyway. I think that GW wanted to get a long look of Davis on film. My favorites are Mo and Bryant. Presumably, each will get enough game snaps to clear up the pecking order. Plus practice snaps, of course. I really, really like both players and have no favorite. I sense that Mo is the coaches favorite. I would even go so far as to say that maybe they think Mo's ceiling might even be Pro Bowl level.
As to depth behind these starters? I think we're in pretty danged good shape, frankly.
CB. Roberson, Hill, Jordan, and Washington seem more than adequate. Notice that I didn't mention Sensabaugh? A wonderful human being, but maybe the 7th best CB at present? I realize that the release of Sensabaugh is unlikely, in part because of the dead money. But isn't that a "sunk cost", anyway? The fact is that he's been outplayed by youngsters in the 2 games I've seen and in practices via multiple camp reporters. But I digress...
S. One of Alexander or Bryant should be able to claim that starting position opposite TJM. Worst case scenario? They can sign a Whitner or some other vet S as a FA. But again, I favor either Alexander or Bryant, myself. Once GW begins his scheming and utilizes his packages this secondary should look a whole lot more effective. And both Alexander and Bryant know the GW system like the back of their hands, don't they?
To summarize, I think our secondary is gonna be just fine once the real bullets start to fly. Might be a little bumpy at the very first, but after that, look out!
