I know you travel to So Cal often so I'm assuming an issue of this significance would not be a problem But before I give you a recommendation what do his parents say about this. Seems like it's their call. If they are OK with the travel I would highly recommend two orthopedic venues. One is USC and the other is Newport Orthopedics in Newport Beach and Irvine. I had a total hip replacement at USC and a more recent fairly invasive abdominal surgery there. Top notch people. At Newport Ortho I had the other hip replaced and my wife has had major wrist and knee surgery there. You can't get any better advice than any of these people. Keep in mind what you and his parents don't want is debilitating pain in his shoulder for his life and a further injury can do just that. See the comments above by Rusty. Anyway take it FWIW.
