I trust Fish too, btw. I love the fact that he will NOT push the kid into the job.
But here's the thing... Keenum just does not stand out as an option over him to my eye. If we had Favre or Brees here as the starter then sure, it would make sense. But this over-careful spin on the QB stuff that comes from Fisher's tight-lipped approach to things is wrong IMO.
Goff looks very smooth and capable in this offense in practice, and downright deadly in redzone drills. For a QB running the 2 minute drill is a great indicator of how well he knows wtf is going on, because he needs to balance field position, time, on top of the already difficult job of QB. What he did on Saturday reinforces what many that have seen him in prior practices are saying. There simply isn't some great dropoff from Keenum to Goff and that's now, when it's still early.
I don't care what the media spin is. Fish always misleads the media. You gotta read between the lines on Fish. And he is already seeing and noting what is said above, in his comments post-practice Saturday. This is a kid who came over from a spread offense but 6 days into camp is running the two minute drill in scrimmage smoothly with full awareness. There is a month left, and I see no reason to think this kid won't continue to impress.
Oh and I don't have anything against Case. If he kills it in the preseason games and makes the kid wait so be it. But I just don't think there's any way that happens unless they are worried about the OL protections.
