I've been doing the DirecTV dance for a long time and have been getting the NFL Ticket free (as well as other discounts) for over 10 years. But as I've said before, since AT&T bought DirecTV, and my wife works for AT&T, I now get the NFL Ticket for free
no more haggling or threatening to quit for me!
She did tell me that AT&T will make it harder for subscribers to get the ticket for free. They've been told this so make sure to go into negotiations with a plan in mind. Always be nice but be willing to drop the service. As others have said, most of the time they will call you back and try to retain you (with a good chance of getting the ticket for free). Worse case scenario, sign back up with a new email and in your wife's name and take advantage of the new deals!
