I thought that the Rams goal in this particular draft was to add depth for development and provide eventual starters for upcoming retirees and UFA’s. Any quality snaps this season would be a bonus.
Well, if so, Day 2 seems like a fail.
Another thing. Fan perceived need positions were far different than Ram perceived needs. A 5th speedy WR in the 2nd freaking round. And with route running, hands, catch radius issues that McVay must scheme open? Seriously? When tons of top quality football players were sitting there that could have been starters by ‘22 without a doubt? OC, LOT, OG, Edge, ILB, and CB? Unbelievable.
I can understand not trading down at 57 if there were no partners, but I can’t understand abandoning the successful philosophy that Rams have employed for years for this gadget WR. Arrrrrgh!
Two of the lesser needs as fans saw it were speed vertical WR and ILB. Yet here we are entering Day 3 with those two very things while approximately 70 of the best football players in a shallow draft have been gobbled up. Three serious unforced errors at 57, 88, and 103 imho.
Now Rams are forced to pull rabbits out of their hat with the three 4ths, the 6th, and the 7th to halfway salvage this whole draft. A very tall order, don;t you think?
Here are the positions that we could have bolstered by now with 3 new players at a minimum:
LOT
OC
OG
WOLB
CB
Any 3 of those and Rams would be miles ahead of where we are right now in prepping for both ‘21 and ‘22. A reasonable trade down would have made it 4 players but I suspect that McVay was locked onto Tutu at 57. And Snead allowed the hated 49ers to hose him at 88. Just sickening.
My worst fear may have been realized. That Brad Holmes was the intuitive and common sense source of much of the Rams draft success in recent years and now there’s no one to restrain Snead/McVay from their impulsive tendencies.
Look, I’m gonna try to give Atwell and Jones the benefit of the doubt because it’s not their fault that Rams picked them where they did, but both have got to win me over.
And Snead/McVay have got to show me the wisdom of trading down From 88 to the mid 4th with the 49ers by hitting 2 HR’s. Right now my confidence in this FO is badly shaken. This is looking like Amateur Hour so far.
