Let’s face it. Sean McVay was outcoached in the Super Bowl. He admits it (but he takes blame for a lot of things that he probably doesn’t need to). And many fans point to the interior of the Rams OL as being the main contributor to the near total ineptness of the Rams office that night. I know, others point to Goff, as well as me, but I believe we can see from the recently posted superb analysis of Goff’s play that night, that a big reason for that was the collapse of the interior O-line.
A very big reason for that collapse was the play of John Sullivan at center. According to PFF, he allowed 32 pressures over the last 9 games. I didn’t look to see the grades of the defensive tackles he faced, but the Rams did play against some stronger lines in that last month of the season. But it all totally fell apart in the Super Bowl.
Now we have 2 raw youngsters starting in the middle of the O-line for 2019. And you just know that defensive coordinators and D-line coaches on our schedule are going to pick apart that Super Bowl tape to gain insight into McVay’s Waterloo. Will McVay be ready with options to combat that? Panthers, Saints, and Browns start out against us and their D-lines are not sloppy by any means. Without a very good plan to give Goff options and take pressure off the pocket, we could be looking outside very quickly.
No, I’m not down on McVay or Goff. Both are young, improving by the year, and are smart. McVay was going up against possibly the smartest head coach in NFL history. But McVay can’t be caught flat footed again to start this season. Recognize your weakness and do your best to minimize it before your opponent maximizes it.
