Tavon contract questions for a capologist?

November 01, 2017 02:49PM
Yes, I know there are a bunch of (very interesting) Tavon threads out there already, but I had a specific question for a Herd capologist guru. (Who is our resident cap guru, anyway....?)
I am using this page for reference for Tavon contract details:
[overthecap.com]

I wanted confirmation on the following numbers:

2017 cap number: 15 mil. (Wow)

2018 cap number: 8 mil.

2018 effect on cap if released: 5 mil dead money, 3 mil cap savings.

2019 cap number: 9 mil, zero dead money if released.

Effect of trading Tavon in spring of 2018: if there is a willing trade partner ( unlikely since it would involve a team willing to pay Tavon about 9 million per year for the next four years?), Rams would save the full 8 mill in cap savings For 2018.

The “Tavon debate” for 2018 PROBABLY boils down to two options: (a) keep him or (b) cut him and absorb 5 mil in dead money but also “save” 3 mil which can be used elsewhere.

So my specific question is this: technically speaking, if we traded Tavon next year, we would not have any dead money and would save the full 8 mil. for 2018. However, this scenario is still UNLIKELY because a trade partner would have to absorb the remaining 3 or 4 years of his contract at 8 or 9 mil per year?

In other words— is it accurate to say that trading Tavon in 2018 is still unlikely because most teams would be unwilling to take on his inflated contract? And is a trade involving a restructure unlikely as well?

Lastly— I think RockRam made a persuasive case for keeping Tavon in 2018 because it is unlikely the Rams will find a better player for 3 million. I just wanted confirmation that the possibility of trading Tavon next year— and saving the full 8 mil- is highly unlikely.
