Some here think that Austin has a year or so left with the Rams before they cut him and save the money. Maybe. Certainly if McVay can't turn him into a consistent star this year, the odds aren't good. After this year, there would be a net $3mil savings to cut him.
I think the guy who is going to be short term is Robert Woods. He had better emerge as the leader of the pack and have his best year ever, or it is going to be one and done with him considering the kind of WRs that we drafted. And, it, too, is an issue of money. If they cut him after next year, there is a $5mil cap savings.
After 2018, the cap savings are even more.
I suspect that the Rams will keep no more than 6 WRs. Maybe only 5. Probably 3 true TEs. 3 RBs plus a true FB. The only way Harkey survives is as an inline TE if McVay even employs a classic inline TE (not so sure he will).
Several guys who have been with the Rams WR corp are not going to survive. No doubt locks are Austin, Woods, and Kupp, and highly likely is Reynolds. After that it is impossible to know. But in a way too premature guess, I'd go with Cooper and Spruce surviving. If only one, it'll bet he most important contributor to STs. Training camp and preseason are going to be huge for those two. I can't see Thomas, Marquez or the others hanging on.
