This coming season it seems that McVay wants the offense to be more diverse, and I would agree that Nacua-Adams-Atwell will be more diverse than Nacua-Kupp-Robinson, the three guys with the most targets last year.
Then, assume the Rams draft a WR. Where does Kupp fit it, also considering that the Rams want to increase Whittington's workload? Would Kupp be WR4? WR5? WR6?!?
Even as WR4, what would that cost, and how would Kupp adjust to that role? The Rams' opinion is obvious and I don't disagree, although I am definitely interested in what you (and others) think.
On the open market as a FA Kupp will land a starting role and make more than the Rams would pay him as a backup so they did him a solid from that perspective. And by moving on from Kupp the Rams don't have to be concerned about how a former All Pro WR adjusts to being a bench guy, and that is no small thing IMO.
