Agree that McVays runs a somewhat west coast, run first offense that is not designed to score 30+ points per game.
It is not a "wide open" offense.
We don't take a lot of shots down the field, nor do we have a bunch of speedsters on offense.
Tutu is underutilized and hasn't exactly converted enough when we've tried it.
Kupp and Puka are, for the most part, used like possession receivers. They break tackles, but often if they catch the ball in stride, they are running left to right, not north and south. Or they are underneath, or headed to the sidelines. So it limits our number of 50+ yard plays aka quick scores.
Also, McVay has not evolved from throwing left and right near the end zone. He rarely throws the ball forward. When he does it is either short of the goal line (often on the sides by the pylon) so the guy has to push his way in, or the fade to the corner. He avoids throwing to the meat of the end zone.
He also generally tries to inch his way in from the 25 working for the first down. Instead of take shots to the end zone from there. Which was Jeff Fisher's M.O. as well.
Many of these things are why we rarely get turnovers in the red zone and usually walk away with points, so I get why McVay does it. He generally doesn't throw a ton across the middle, but this safer, more west coast, play calling also is not aggressive enough to score 30 consistently.
But it is usually good for 24-27 PPG.
And Whittington is a Kupp/Puka clone so I don't see anything changing. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing as we have been to 2 SB's under McVay and have a pretty talented squad this year.
But it was nice having OBJ for a while, seemed like we had another gear.
