When you go looking for a trade the team approached has the leverage, the negotiating power.

The questions and second-guesses (starting with Mel Kiper's) regarding "They paid too much - next year's second was more than they should have paid," are senseless at that point.

If the other team had come to the Rams and said, "We're accumulating picks for next year - would you consider trading places this year and giving us a third round pick next year?" the dynamic changes.
