Restructure Matthew Stafford's contract: $19.86M savings
The Rams are fully committed to Stafford moving forward and there’s no reason to believe they’ll look to cut him before his contract expires in 2026. That makes restructuring his contract a much easier pill to swallow because as along as they plan to keep him through 2026, there will be no real penalty for adjusting his deal.
Doing so this offseason would free up $19.86 million for 2024, while also raising his cap hit from $50.5 million to $60.43 million in 2025 and $49.5 million to $59.43 million in 2026. Those are obviously massive cap charges, but it would give the Rams much more flexibility to go all in this offseason if that’s their plan.
DaSilva suggests converting $29.79M of Stafford's 2024 salary to a signing bonus so they can spread that $29.79M over 3 seasons at $9.93M a season. As he mentions that would reduce his 2024 cap hit from $49.5M to $29.64M while adding $9.93M to his cap hits in '25 and '26.

I like this one better.
- Convert $29.79M of Stafford's 2024 salary to a signing bonus (same as DaSilva suggests)
- Add void years in 2027 and 2028 so they can spread the signing bonus over 5 years instead of 3 (at $5.958M a year)
This would clear $23.832M of cap space in 2024 instead of $19.86.
It would raise Stafford's cap hit in 2025 to $56.458M instead of $60.43, and his cap hit in 2026 to $55.458M instead of $59.53.
But they would pay the piper a bit in 2027 to the tune of $11.916M in dead money. (Not that [
overthecap.com] expects the cap in 2027 to be $314M.)
