3 things to know about John Streicher, Tennessee Titans' Coordinator of Football DevelopmentNick Gray
Nashville Tennessean
John Streicher is not among the most well-known members of the Tennessee Titans' staff. His biography on the Titans' website is three sentences long.
But he became the staff member calling the shots for Saturday's preseason finale against the Chicago Bears as Mike Vrabel quarantines after testing positive for COVID-19 last Sunday.
The Titans did not specifically identify Streicher as the acting head coach on Saturday, with special teams coach Craig Aukerman handling the team's communication with players. But Streicher has virtually all other responsibilities that head coach may have in a game.
But who is Streicher?
John Streicher is the Tennessee Titans' Coordinator of Football Development
Streicher joined the franchise in 2018, the same year as Vrabel, and initially began as the Assistant to the Head Coach. Streicher served as Vrabel's assistant for two seasons and has spent the last two years as the Coordinator of Football Development.
According to the Titans' TV broadcast Saturday, Streicher remains as Vrabel's righthand man in this role, though it is unclear his specific duties.
Last year, when speaking throughout the season about opponents' COVID-19 issues, Vrabel mentioned Streicher as the staff member in communication with the league.
With Vrabel out Saturday, Streicher handed game management (like a challenge he made in the first half, which he won), communication among coaches and playtime management.
Acting head coach John Streicher laughs with refs after challenging a Bears play during the second quarter of an NFL preseason game at Nissan Stadium Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021 in Nashville, Tenn.
Like Mike Vrabel, Streicher is an Ohio State grad
Streicher earned his Bachelor's degree in 2012 and his Master's in Organizational Leadership in 2014 from The Ohio State University. During his six years in school, Streicher served as a student manager and assistant, according to his LinkedIn page. Vrabel, himself an Ohio State alum, was an Ohio State assistant coach during a portion of Streicher's time as a student, from 2011-13.
College ranks before coming to the Titans
Between Columbus and Nashville, Streicher made a couple stops as a behind-the-scenes staffer for two schools. He spent two years as James Madison's Director of Football Operations and Player Personnel, according to the school, helping the Dukes to consecutive FCS playoff berths.
He then moved to FBS, spending two years as Texas State's Director of Football Operations before joining Vrabel and the Titans.
