This points out why the Rams ought to draft a QB in round 3 or later every year. It's like continuing to play the Lottery, but with not too much money.
Naturally if you are the Bears or another losing team in a QB poor position that is picking pretty high in the draft, you are almost obligated to draft a QB in the 1st round because that's about the only only way you have a chance, however minimal, of acquiring a good one. And, better to spend one 1st rounder than having to trade up and giving up much more draft capital to get there.
And, it is why the Rams should NOT waste a 1st round pick this year on a QB. The odds of that QB ever leading the Rams to the Superbowl are so small, but picking another player at another position that can be an immediate help and a top level player is higher.
The Rams need to do everything possible to hang on to Stafford for as long as he's willing to play. And because of McVay and the vibe of the organization, they are a magnet for FA players much like the Pats used to be. When the time comes for the Rams to replace Stafford, a QB FA signing or even a trade for a top level vet QB makes much more sense and brings far more assurance of getting a Superbowl level player. But that time is not yet.
