McVay wants interchangeable parts. He has a type in mind that can function as an integer in his offense.
Not saying I agree with it; just saying that's what I've seen - and I see the merit of the approach with OL, QB; less with skill players. I want variety in those rooms.
In other words, I agree more with you.
McVay seems to be getting away from the speedy little wideout fixation and going instead for Kupp-Puka types. Good for him, so far - we'll see what the next draft brings.
I think the need in the backfield is less for cookie-cutter types as fill-ins, and more for specialists. Nothing wrong with Royce Freeman that I can see; he's been in the system for long enough to know it, and could wear a defense down if given sufficient carries. Why make Williams run between the tackles all the time?
There's something to be said for not fatuguing your backs, and at the same time pounding the defense through the course of aa game. It puts you in a position to win the fourth quarter. Over the course of the season, there's something to be said for having backs on the bench who are seasoned and have accumulated enough snaps to step in and execute - and with fresh enough legs in the RB room to enter the post season in shape, and with confidence.
