McVay hired Staley in 2020 for one simple reason: the Fangio defense was the one that he had the hardest time game planning against so he figured why don't we run that defense and make it that hard on the teams we play?
Remember that Bears game in 2018 where the Bears basically laid down the blueprint on how to counter McVay's offense? The Bears won 15-6 and teams tried to replicate what the Bears did the rest of the season.
Prior to that Bears game the Rams had scored 33, 34, 35, 38, 33, 23, 39, 29, 35, 36, 54, and 30. And no, not every team was successful in their attempts to implement that scheme, but Belichick was, beating the Rams with that style defense in the Super Bowl 13-3.
I bring all this up because Staley was the DC & secondary coach for the Bears in 2017 & 2018, then spent 2019 as the outside linebacker coach under Vic Fangio in Denver. McVay hired Staley for one simple reason: he could implement a defense that other teams would struggle against.
So the question in my mind is what defense has been giving McVay fits lately? (I honestly don't know the answer to that, but I know some of you do, so please weigh in.)
And whatever the answer to that question is I firmly believe that McVay will hire someone who runs that defense.
