I've not followed SI for many years but I remember them drifting away from purely covering sports, to mixing political themes and other social issues in with sports or as stand alone articles. My memory is a little fuzzy but I think they brought this slow death upon themselves.

I do remember reading some great in-depth articles and really enjoying what I read.
