I am very much afraid that this area is a McVay blind spot.
He simply can’t bring himself to properly invest in players for his ST coordinators. This is a 7 year trend line. He’s 0 for 3 since Fassel and he inherited Fassel, I believe. Sigh…
Jeff Fisher was hired as the Coach of the St Louis Rams on Jan. 13, 2012. John Fassel was hired as the Special Teams Coordinator two weeks later. After the Rams fired Fisher in 2016 and hired Sean McVay, John Fassel was the only coach retained from the Fisher regime.
Per Wikipedia, Fassel took a lead role in developing the talents of kicker Greg Zuerlein, punter and holder Johnny Hekker and long snapper Jake McQuaide. Together, Zuerlein, Hekker, and McQuaide have combined for seven Pro Bowl appearances and remained together as a unit for seven seasons going into the 2019 season. Under Fassel's guidance, Rams players earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors 15 times.
McVay got to taste some Special Teams success for a couple of years with Fassel, et al. still in place. Surely he can see that Fassel is still able to produce at a level we can only dream about these days. If McVay wants that again, why don't his actions seem to reflect that in his hires, drafts, and trades?
