Sure, there are some good STs out there but it sure seems like RELIABLE kicking is getting more rare. Punters...Where have all the Ray Guys gone?? What REEEEALLY kills me is not seeing the sidelines used on Punts, like what was done so well back in the 70s and 80s.
As far as the Rams go....On Punt Returns??? I have not felt comfy since Henry Ellard was back there catching them!
It's why I always admired Bill Parcels. He DID NOT horse around with STs.
The old coffin corner we used to see so regularly in the 70s and 80s has basically gone the way of the dodo. Why? Because the "Aussie" style punt is far more effective. Punters theses days hang it up high and are able to put backspin on it, similar to a skilled golfer hitting a wedge. There is a better chance with this type of punt that it will stop before the end zone (or fair caught around the 10), versus a punt spiraling towards the sideline that is much tougher to "gauge" correctly to pin the opposition deep. Much more likely to "shank" the coffin corner punt and sail it out of bounds up near the 20 or to put it through the back corner of the end zone for a touchback. More room for error with the "Aussie" punt - don't have to be as precise, not to mention you are kicking the ball a shorter distance since you aren't sending it in such an extreme direction. Shorter distance = more control.
