The Rams are currently 9th in the NFC and only the top 7 make the playoffs. Even if the Rams do go 5-1 they still need at least two teams in front of them to drop a couple games.
The Rams do not control their own destiny. If they finish 5-1 (or even 6-0) they will miss the playoffs if the teams ahead of them also win their games.
If the Rams do manage to finish with a 10-7 record (which is a herculean task, btw) the Rams need at least two of these things to happen:
The Pack are also 5-6. They would have to lose 2 more games for the Rams to pass them since the Pack beat the Rams.
The Vikings are 6-6. If they match the Rams with a 10-7 record it will come down to tie-breaker, which I hope the Rams win. (And if that happens I wouldn't consider that backing in ...) Obviously the Vikings losing 2 more games would be even better.
The Seahawks are 6-5. The Rams hold the tie-breaker, but the Seahawks would need to lose 2 more games for that to matter. If they both finish 10-7 the Rams beat them out on a tie breaker. Again, I don't see that as backing in.
(Note that if the Rams one loss is to the Saints then the Rams have to pass three teams to make the playoffs, adding the Saints to the mix. If the Saints beat the Rams then the Saints have to lose two other games for the Rams to finish ahead of them.)
Bottom line: the Rams do not control their own destiny, and that is true even if they finish 6-0. The more likely scenario, though, is that they win 4 of their last 6 games to finish 9-8 ... and then they will need all the help they can get. Personally I hope the rest of the NFC plays along and the Rams make the playoffs ... by the skin of their teeth if necessary.
