The dots connect to paint a certain picture with Bennett, but until it is revealed, we don't know for sure that the picture looks like. Those of us who have seen similar pictures up-close have an idea of what we're seeing so far in the outlines. And so we speculate - not in a gossip mongering or mean-spirited way, but out of concern.
McVay, meantime, is doing the right thing for the player: he is protecting Bennett's dignity and right to anonymity. Better to let the spculation rise and die down than to label the young man before he has completed his program - for whatever afflicts him.
Even under incessant and pestiferous questioning from a press that asks the same question again and again in different ways, McVay quietly doesn't budge. He repeats the "personal matter.. in-house... " messages over and over again, until the press finally - finally - gets the message. And tha sends a message to the lockerroom: Coach cares about you and you can trust him to have your back when things get sticky, personal.
He has shown that with players who are struggling on the field or off of it, and players who are on their way out.
Bennett will be welcomed back when he returns, and any announcement as to where he's been will be his to make or keep to himself. And whatever Bennett decides, McVay will have his back.
