This is basics of Pete Carroll's defense...there are variations
but this is 3-buzz.... it id 4 short, 3 deep.
So with 4 short rather than 5 it does not lock down short stuff as much
as Cover-2, but with 3 deep rather than 2 it take care of deep stuff better
So, if a team likes to take more shots you want to have the CBs deeper
and taking the #1 WR to each side (usually, there are exceptions)
and they take him deep...and the free safety reads the play and "caps"
the most dangerous (QB can only throw one way--which is why looking off
the safety is so important when he's is in the middle of the field trying
do figure out which way to go)
But LBers take the flats they "buzz" the flats...and RBs are usually better
than LBers so the flats more more vulnerable as is the area
behind the short zones...you can get chunk plays in there on play action
because the CBs are occupied as is the safety and also you can run
a short crosser and then a deeper crosser and it's hard to cover everything
So chunk plays can happen in the seams--the yellow areas are the vulnerable
places---and the biggest plays in NFL the "chunk plays" happen in the seams
an offense would set it up so one of the two seams might open up.
