Any well-run organization, in this case the Rams, will have plenty of contingencies in place. If something happens to Les Snead, Demoff, McVay, all of them, they at least have a list of possible replacements. If someone offers the house for Donald or Kupp, what impact would it have from a salary cap standpoint, draft standpoint, wins and losses standpoint? They should have an idea if the opportunity comes up.
Talking to Stafford's reps in general terms doesn't mean they were planning on trading him or restructuring him. But it makes sense to discover where he stands as he represents a huge chunk of the offense and the salary cap. And apparently other teams are interested in him for the right price. You have to do your due diligence, that's all there is to it.
