It could be all of this trade talk was just that---talk

What I mean is that the Rams never had any intention whatsoever of trading Stafford, or any of the "Big 3" for that matter. But they may have had offers and listened seriously to them. Why do that if you have no intention of making a trade?

Simple. You are telling other teams that you are approachable in regards to any player. In that way teams will keep you in mind first when it comes to being a potential trading partner. It keeps options wide open for the future.
