Who's to say if they didn't pick Tutu that they would have picked Humphrey? 2nd round busts are about a 50/50 and Tutu could end up on the right side of the 50 if he has a good year.
Perhaps there is some recency bias? Think back to Robinson or Austin the 8th pick in the draft. They were on teams desperate for talent and had many chances to succeed. Tutu been on a deep team and will only really get a chance to play regularly this year.
I hear you, Deacon. Heaven knows Rams have made other poor picks. But most of those were considered, at the time, to be non-reach highly regarded players. History proved otherwise and inferior coaching didn’t help, either.
But this one occurred in recent times and at the behest of our ‘genius’ HC. Even at the moment the pick was announced most draft aficionados realized that this was a reach pick by at least a round while at the same time a stud like Humphrey at a position of need was just sitting there. That’s a double whammy self inflicted wound that will take 10 years to outgrow.
I can only conclude that McVay had fallen in love with Atwell to the point of ignoring his drawbacks and wanted to prove that he was the smartest guy in the room.
A situation that has proven to be a colossal backfire that has hopefully taught him some humility. He has since admitted that one of his faults is that he can be overly impulsive.
