Nice post, 43. But personally I'm in wait-and-see mode on Blackburn. Don't get me wrong, I like the ST guys the Rams picked up. But considering the Rams didn't have a LS or kicker on the roster even after the draft, wouldn't every LS and kicker with a pulse be beating on the Rams door trying to get a deal signed? Granted, the Rams did pick up what seems to be three nice UDFAs in Ward, Brown, and Dunn but in reality the Rams did little more than sign the top prospects at LS and kicker, something you or I probably could have done.
As for drafting a punter, it seems he was the guy they wanted so they guaranteed they'd get him by drafting him. I really like the move, but let's see the guy do the job under the bright lights of SoFi Stadium before we sing his praises.
Then, of course, there's the issue of covering kickoffs and punts, not to mention returning kicks and punts. (All without drawing a flag!). At this point there's no way to judge how good or bad the Rams will be at any of this. Punt 55 yards and give up a 30 yard return won't impress anyone, especially if there's a holding call on top of it.
Bottom line: So far, so good. Call me in September.
Fair enough, AlbaNY.
The proof must come on the field, of course, but I must say that I’m very impressed by what Blackburn has accomplished in such a short time. More boldness and effectiveness at ST than I’ve seen in years.
I’m hopeful that McVay accommodates Blackburn with some choices for the rest of his ST units by final cutdowns. Something that I feel he has not done sufficiently for previous ST coordinators.
