Sure, there are questions about how the OL shakes out, for example. But to me the biggest question marks are what they will or will not have at Edge and CB. Defensively, Aaron Donald is Aaron Donald, Jones is a quality ILB and Fuller could be a stabilizing presence at safety.
But if they cannot generate more consistent QB pressure or play more aggressive (2021 style) at CB they will be dead in the water. They just will.
Agreed, 93. It’s gonna be all about Edge and CB.
At Edge we’ve lost Floyd. He was overpaid but he was excellent at contain. Not so much in coverage and wasn’t what I would call a top rusher, either. But other than Hoecht in late season what did we have on other side? Not much. We’ve still got Hoecht, but we’ve added promising rushers to boost badly needed pressure on opposing QB’s. So I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we’ve upgraded at edge overall.
At CB Ramsey is a huge loss, no question. Then again, one could argue that he’s already lost a step from his prime and could question whether Morris was scheming him best with the star assignments. He did allow more big plays than he ever used to, anyway. Meanwhile, I was encouraged by what I saw from Durant as the season wore down and I’m really enthused by this Tomlinson kid. Not saying he’s a Ramsey replacement, but he plays like a 1st rounder, even winning an award as best CB in college football last year. I’m counting on Pleasant and Lake to regroup that secondary and give these kids more opportunities to make plays this year.
I guess I’m saying that this ‘new’ D might be a pleasant surprise as it gels together.
