Nobody I prefer at LG right now. Put him where he's best, let him play there, develop there. reach his max potential there.
If we try to make a center out of Avila there's the blocking assignment and QB chemistry learning curve while we do what at LG? If we remember Bobby Evans, a RT playing LG, didn't do much in that spot for the players around him except make them look worse than what they were. I remember watching Evans block air while a linebacker went inside him, got past the C trying to do double-duty and smeared Stafford.
I cite that memory as an example of what can happen when we move people away from their best natural position. I appreciate the wisdom of having all O line players trained to play all positions, but it can be driven to a fetish (a la Kromer.) There's also wisdom in putting your best pieces where they belong and building around them.
That's what I'd like to see done with Avila.
Allen's legs are what they are; his shelf life is nearing the expiration date. Beyond Shelton as a marginally serviceable backup for when Allen is hurt, I'd like to see the Rams do the right thing (whatever that turns out to be) at center.
Meantime I'd like to see Z. Evans wedge himself on either side of Avila during the preseason and see how many yards he can get through narrow creases.
