I really wish the Rams could have landed Vorhees in the draft, give him his medical redshirt season then next year move Avila to C and put Vorhees in at LG.
But I feel LG is well taken care of for now. I just hope Bruss gets stronger in the off season and can be another mauler at RG.
The more I look into it, Avila has a chance to be a dominant guard. Rams almost traded up to take Zack Martin in 2014. He was a guy who could play tackle or guard...but his best position body-type wise was guard.
Sure, he could have played tackle and been good, but he's been a dominant guard. It would have been a waste to see him play
tackle and be good to very good.
Centers, because then beging every play with hand between their legs are always at a disadvantage in pass blocking and run blocking, which is
why they rarely single block - when there is a nose tackle on them a guard helps. When the center is open, he helps a guard, or can help a tackle.
It would be a waster to have someone who looks to be great, especially at that one thing bit block the better interior rushers.
Think of all the teams---who has a nose tackle that is a better pass rusher than their 3-/4i technique?
Or---say Aaron Donald were now on another team and he's coming to town, and he's playing next to a clone of Greg Gaines or SJD, the NTs
he's played against.
Do you want Avilia blocking him as a guard or as a center on the Gaines-type character?
Run blocker is a bit different in that the center in Duo gets help from the guard so in either case it is in tandem, but with the center he's often the one who released from the duo block and goes to the next level, takes more finesse...the harder work is, by and large going to be one the guard.
So, if they get a guy who can be a great guard -- then sure, but Avila at the center, but it is easier to find a good center next year than have a great guard drop to you again.
