I'd cede Shelton as better, largely because he can stay healthy and is dependable, but Avila hasn't called a McVay scheme line blocking assignment - yet - and that's where both his QB and coaches place high value on Allen.
Ive seen Shelton get shoved around. More than Allen, anyway.
Allen's ability to stay healthy, to have rehabbed that knee to where it won't get re-injured, is a season crapshoot we both dread. If the knee comes through the extended time off stronger and is stable (he was rushed back into play too soon a couple of times IMO) I like the idea of 1) Allen's vet maturity bewtween a couple of rooks in Avila and Bruss*, and 2) in that grouping creating a veritable fortress of a pocket for Stafford.

*Bruss is still a rookie now having an extra-long camp in my book. Maybe he and Shelton fight it out for RG. If Shelton wins, he steps over into Allen's spot when/if needed and Bruss steps in at RG. On paper, Avila-Allen-Bruss look formitable. I like our Oline much better already.
Here’s my thinking.
Avila is best LG or OC on the team right now. Agreed?
Imo, Shelton is the superior OC over Allen. agreed?
Allen just can’t stay healthy. That’s a deal breaker for an OL seeking continuity. Agreed?
So, by process of elimination, Allen is now 3rd best OC on current roster.
