In 1973 David Ray had a career year, but against Dallas in the playoffs missed 3 makeable FG's that would have changed that game immensely. Ray was 3 of 6, if he makes two of those the Rams when Tony Baker scores the TD lead the Cowboys 22-17 for example although Hadl had an abysmal game too.
When the Rams traded for Tom Dempsey in 1975 thought that was a great, but Dempsey because of his half foot had the propensity to get his kicks blocked and it happened multiple times against the Cowboys & Vikings. I wished the Rams had gone with the soccer style kickers back then as opposed to the conventual kickers like Ray & Dempsey. They finally moved on from Dempsey signing Rafael Septién their first soccer style kicker after he was released from the Saints.
Dempsey missed so many extra points it was awful. His kickoffs were not even that deep. I think he was trusted because he could kick long and that's it.
and then the punting issues--Rusty Jackson--talk about bad
