I really wouldn't use their chiefs defense as an example her lol. They got carved to pieces for being agressive. You're arguing against your own logic here. You complain about soft coverage giving up chunks of yards and then you compliment the chiefs defense that gave up explosive plays all night long.
But I'm glad to hear you say that you can win with different coverages because, as I (and your friend Jim lol) have said before ... :
1. Your personnel matters. The Rams need better personnel (evidenced by the "ultra soft coverage" winning us a Superbowl just two years ago).
2. Pass rush matters. Jalen hurts was basically unbothered by the defensive line most of the game and that's why the secondary got lit up. A problem we also faced.
I'm not really complaining about our soft zone giving up "chunks" of yards RR. My complaint is "mostly" that our Shell allows too many FREE completions. Especially against teams like the whiners who excel at getting the ball out early.
Another complaint is that it pretty much neuters the pass rush due to the quick passing opportunities that it allows.
As for the Chiefs giving up "explosive plays"...yes, they did. I do know that playing tighter increases the chances of giving up some big plays. I never denied that.
Again, my issue is that we play that Ultra Soft Zone too much, There are times we need to be aggressive and there are times we need to play coverage. Morris played more Charmin Shell than any other team in the NFL. It's a fact.
Yes, we did win with it. I get that. I just give more credit to the 3 HOF'ers on the D than I do the "scheme".
As for my "friend", I don't think we are allowed to play together anymore.
Lol!!! I'm glad you took that as a joke. It was light hearted on my end but I feel like fun doesn't convey well through text.
But yeah I guess we'll see what happens next year. I think the Rams will add to the secondary and pass rush. Then we can compare their success. I mean, if soft coverage eliminates pass rush, then how did we manage to harass every QB in the playoffs last year? We stone cold shut down 3 out of the 4 offenses we faced. Trust me. If soft coverage was so easy to beat, no one would run it and dinking and dunking would be the solution every time you saw it. If the Rams add more capable corners who can mirror route patterns then you can't sink and dunk. You'll be throwing it right into a defenders hands (like Darius Williams).
