Economically, wouldn't you want to draft OT and DE's.. hope you win the lottery and they perform really well on rookie contracts.
And then spend smaller FA dollars on interior O-linemen?
I think higher grade OT's/DE's tend to be able to start in year 1 vs other positions.. or am I wrong?
Otherwise, you blow your load on bigger dollars for OT/DE's FAs since they command much more dollars and then draft interior OL which take more time to develop, thus wasting the advantages of rookie contracts?
You raise excellent points, melonhead.
So many moving parts here.
Draft pundits aren’t impressed with LOT types at the top of this draft, but they do like edge well into the 2nd round.
Then there’s the strong possibility that Snead trades his 2nd and/or 3rd for a proven stud Type at either edge or LOT or OG/OC. Removes all risk, at least.
The FA option comes earlier than draft, too. A solid OG/OC type could probably be affordable and would also remove risk.
I think Rams really want to come out of this offseason with 5-6 starter upgrades, one way or another.
Edge
OL (either LOT or OG/OC type but don’t need both because of players already on roster).
I think they most covet those 2 positions, but the following aren’t far behind:
TE
RB
CB
S
Backup QB
WR (for competition and depth)
That’s actually 8 players, but they do have trades, FA, and 10 picks in the draft. Also, they don’t necessarily HAVE to have immediate starters at RB, CB, S, WR, and backup QB come opening day but it would be terrific if a few were of that quality.
All of Snead’s skills plus a little luck is gonna be required this offseason.
