That's true. Despite the canopy SoFi is considered an open air stadium. (The canopy isn't attached to the spectator bowl anywhere, and there is no air conditioning except in the suites.)

The canopy serves as a giant screen for in-the-air viewing and the panels filter out some of the UV rays. But that's all it's intended to do.
