When I was a kid, me and my buddies went through a spell where we would write to our favorite athletes and ask for autographed pictures. Not all of them sent one back, but many did. Jim Hart would always write a personal response, if you asked him a question or something he would write a couple of lines to answer or just to thank you for writing to him.
I know I had some from Rams players but I don't remember which ones. I'm sure I wrote to Roman Gabriel and Deacon Jones (my two favorites) and probably Merlin Olsen, but I don't remember if I get anything back.
I still have the one from Bart Starr. I wrote a poem about him, and one of my buddies wrote to him and included the poem. Starr obviously assumed he had written it, and while he didn't include personal notes on what any of the rest of us got from him, he wrote a note to my buddy thanking him for the poem. I said "You told him YOU wrote it?" He said no, he just said he had a poem, and Starr ASSUMED he wrote it. Okay. But then the local small town paper got word of it and wrote up an article about the poem HE wrote, and the note he got back from Bart Starr. I said "you told the PAPER you wrote it?!" And he said no, they assumed he wrote it and he just didn't tell them he didn't write it. I said okay I can understand that you didn't specify to Bart Starr who wrote it, but when the paper asked about it THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD TIME TO SAY YOU DIDN'T ACTUALLY WRITE IT!"
But he said he was too embarrassed at the point to admit it. LOL!
So, I am publis.... er, uh HE is publi.... I dunno, it's confusing. LOL
