I asked RAMbeau what movie does it for him and he said it's The Days of Wine and Roses with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. If you've never seen it... it's about a couple who succumb to alcoholism and then how the disease destroys their relationship and everything else in their lives. The movie is a Hollywood classic.
The last scene in the movie is Kirsten going to Joe's apartment one night wanting a reconciliation with him. She's shaky and nervous as she tells him that she's been sober for two days and only stopped drinking long enough to talk to him, to try and convince him to take her back. Their daughter, Debbie, is asleep in the next room. Joe tells Kirsten that she is welcome back anytime, but only if she stops drinking. Kirsten refuses to admit she's an alcoholic. She tells Joe that she wants things they way they used to be and she tells Joe she just doesn't want to give up alcohol completely. Joe stands his ground and explains that he's been sober almost a year and that life is good without alcohol. He tells her he's got a steady job, the apartment, and that their daughter needs her. Joe says that life can be good for her too if she would just try. Kirsten tells him she can't. She doesn't want to because without alcohol the world looks dirty. Kirsten sadly advises Joe to give up on her, and leaves. Joe fights the urge to go after her, and looks out the window watching her walk down the street and disappear into the night.
