First, nice post, Florida.
About Goff and the Rams...
I don’t see how in the world we can fairly judge ANY QB playing behind such a poor OL. It’s inherently unfair.
Goff looks like a promising young QB that has played very well when surrounded with a good OL, good weapons, and an elite HC/OC. Good enough for a 13-3 record and SB season. When he loses those surrounding things his performance suffers. Well, duh! It behooves the Rams to keep him protected, dammit! If they do, then Goff is proven to be capable of getting us to the SB. That’s plenty good enough for me.
I think that it’s no coincidence that Goff’s ‘struggles’ coincided with his OL being exposed last year starting with the Lions game then snowballing from there.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and predict that Goff will once again be top 10 once his OL gets fixed. Lol.
I don't disagree with a word you say and yet I'll briefly explain why that's not good enough for me.
It's a matter of degrees. Sure we expect performance to suffer when a QB loses the things you list. But I don't expect that performance to drop so precipitously to where statistically he's one of the worst starters in the league.
Ultimately, saying he's capable of putting up top numbers while being surrounded with an abundance of elite performers is not good enough for me because I don't think it's that realistic to have a top 3 OL, the best receiving core in the league, elite RBs, and an elite HC/OC at all times. If you have to have all of that for the QB to play well, then IMO that means you don't have an elite QB. Maybe not even a very good QB.
Very good to elite QBs are able to not have some of those things and still play pretty well while raising the play of those around them.
