You're right that there were moments during those 8 games where he made some plays.
I didn't say that. I did not say there were MOMENTS where he made some plays.
I said he was up and down from game to game and the down games coincided with OL issues.
For example he played well in the NFC championship game on the road and they won in a comeback in overtime.
I don't dismiss that. It's real.
I am saying he was inconsistent in the final 8 games, not overall bad as you are claiming, and that when he was down that was driven by OL issues.
So we are saying--and saw--completely different things.
....
You're basically saying it's everyone else's fault and nothing's wrong with Goff. That's far too large of a leap of faith for a half a season's worth of numbers. The o-line may not have been stellar but in the 8 games to end the season they gave up 14 sacks, which was slightly less than the season total of 5%. On the year, that was good for 10th best. Hardly indicative of a unit performing so poorly that Goff's numbers should nose dive. On top of that, they had four 100+ yard rushing games and two 200+. There were some poor rushing games too but overall, again, not illustrative of a unit that is such a liability that Goff went from MVP to barely functional.
From everything I've seen, the decent to good NFL defenses have figured out how to neutralize McVay's guiding influence and Goff has reverted to playing like when he was a rookie when he didn't have that tool at his disposal.
You mention the Saints playoff game as Goff playing well. He did play better than his numbers but in four career games vs. the Saints, it was easily his worst and that's including a game as a rookie under Fisher. His playoff game was 20+ points lower in passer rating than his career average against the Saints. This 8 game stretch in question has seen Goff's numbers drop from a career 94 to the previously mentioned 73. So, the Saints game in particular saw a 20+ point drop and the last 8 games combined are a 20+ point drop. Which seems like more than a coincidence.
