Unless he totally wets the bed this year, he will get a new deal right up there with the other top "paid" QBs. Does he "deserve" it, who knows, but no one other than Snead, and McVay will make the call.
Why do people think JG will get less than the going rate every other QB is getting off "potential? Jimmy G got a massive deal and hadn't done a thing in all the years he's been in the league. Same with Stafford,
I get it, people don't want him to get paid if it means others don't , but it's the way it works right now.
And he will get the deal because the franchise tag would be more than what the deal would be spread over the 5/6 years. imo.
Every year there's a going rate for every position when it comes to 2nd contracts. It can vary a BIT from player to player but not much.
It has nothing to do with our sense of a player's "worth." It's the market. The market says, this year this is what qbs get for 2nd contracts. It always goes up annually, right along with the cap. Basically you put the player in a category--is this a keeper franchise type qb? Or not? If yes then the rate is more or less set, The team decides, is this a player I want to keep. If he is generally seen as a franchise qb and YOUR answer is no we don't want to keep him, then someone else pays him. If the answer is yes we want to keep him, then you pay him.
On a 2nd contract you're paying a player so you have him in his prime. The market says, having this player at this position in his prime costs this much.
As I said, either you pay the guy that, or someone else does.
There is absolutely no metric or mechanism out there, at all, which says this guy wasn't that good in these particular games so he is "worth" x% less. None of this works this way.
