When Apollo 11 landed I was in Rome. On the street Via Veneto to be precise. The street was lined with outdoor cafe's and crowds were heavy. We found a cafe that had a TV we could see and watched on a small black and white TV.
When 11 landed it was like Macy's Thanksgiving Parade broke out.... people unfurled dozens, maybe hundreds, of American flags from the windows along Via Veneto and cheers broke out in the cafes, along the street, and from the windows above. Glasses filled with various beverages were held high.
I had been lucky.... a fanatical space travel fan I knew the landing was about to happen and had been frantic trying to find a cafe, or any place, with a TV so I could watch... we did not have a TV in our hotel room. The celebration went on for hours, or so it seemed. - JamesJM
