The last few seasons of The Waltons were hard to get through. All the old people were gone, John-Boy was gone and the show hobbled along painfully and badly leaning on secondary characters to carry the load. It just wasn't the same. The quality wasn't there anymore, not like the first 4-5 seasons. I'm having the same problem with Little House on the Prairie.
