I'm rarely outside after dark, not even to hang in my own yard. But, yes, I can see stars where I live. I'm about 22 miles west of downtown St Louis. I'm in the 'burbs so I'm not exactly in the country but not near the city either. We've got a bit more space out here so we DO have a night sky that we can see pretty good with the naked eye.

The place where I remember seeing stars at the clearest I've ever seen them in my life was when we camped for a few days/nights in the Grand Canyon. The sky was black as ink and the stars were like polished diamonds. Everything about the Grand Canon was simply spectacular... the massive size of it, the colors of the canyons and rock formations, forests, vegetation, sunsets, and the sky at night. Just wonderful.
