Often, I have seen them with their heads sticking out of the grass before I approach. I have seen them go 40-50 yards in hardly 10 seconds. I'm such a softy when it comes to nature, I cannot even kill a snake....even if poisonous. The one and only time I killed a snake was when we had a very pissed Moccasin in our backyard when my boys were 4 and 2 years old. Even then, I tried to relocate him to the woods behind our house but he came back. It ticked me off to LATER find our entire Cul DeSac wiped out many acres of Wetlands. The Builder , OF COURSE, found a loop hole to build there.
