As you probably know..

The shark was slated to be in Jaws a WHOLE LOT more than it was... But, the mechanical shark RARELY worked.. the constant call over the bullhorn on set was, "the shark is not working".. they even made a documentary about it called "the shark is not working"..

So, because the mechanical shark rarely worked - because nobody ever tested it in salt water - Spielberg had to come up with inventive ways to show that the shark was around.. most notably the music.. when the shark was around, even tho not seen, they played the famous music.. Other things included a draggable dorsal and tail fin, they drug behind a boat that was in various scenes: most notably when it went into The Pond and sailed right past the younger Brody.. that was an awesome shot... when the shark dragged the pier trying to get the holiday roast guys, the yellow barrels being drug etc..

Spielberg, himself, said had the shark worked properly, the movie would not have been nearly as successful, because he was forced to take it into a "Hitchcock" type movie and it worked PERFECTLY..
