If you need to reach 911 in a different area code/city/state than the one you're calling from.... it doesn't look like the way to do it is by calling "9-1-1" and expecting them to transfer your call or that your local 911 will connect you to 911 in the city you're trying to reach. It doesn't work that way.

It looks like you need to look up the 10-digit number for the Emergency department/agency in the city you're trying to reach yourself and call that number. For example, my brother lives in Wichita, Kansas. I looked online for 9-1-1 Emergency Communications in Sedgwick County, Kansas. When I clicked on the link, it took me to a page which shows:

EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY:

9-1-1 or 316.263.6011 if calling from outside Sedgwick County

So there IS a number I could call in Wichita from St Louis. Not all cities have an emergency number to call if you're calling from outside the area, though. If that's the case, then you have to call the non-emergency number and report that you have an emergency.
